What’s Special about Sequoyah?

 

Sequoyah High School has a unique character because of the focus on excellence in all areas of student life; Academics, Athletics and the Fine Arts. Test scores, academic scholarships and achievements consistently rank among the best in the state (and county). Athletics at SHS are an integral part of the character and school climate as evidenced by region championships and regular playoff appearances in multiple sports while many of these excellent athletes are also involved in academic and/or fine arts pursuits. Sequoyah consistently ranks in the top contenders for the Region All-Sports trophy each and has region championships in these sports within the past 5  years; Volleyball, Competition Cheerleading, Boys Tennis, Girls Soccer, Girls Basketball, Girls Golf, Football and Softball. Many athletes also are active participants in academic and fine arts activities as well.

National Blue Ribbon School 2005

SHS was awarded this honor for improved test scores and high academic achievement and was the only high school in the state to receive this honor.

Sequoyah’s Fine Arts Dept. includes both national and regional award winners for the visual arts, ‘One Act’ regions championships for drama in both 4A and 5A classifications, national and state recognitions for chorus members and instrumental music dept. that exemplifies excellence and competitiveness in concert band, marching band, string orchestra and specialty ensembles like “Ocean Spray” steel drum band.

 

The Instrumental music program members also have lettermen in many sports that include captains and team leaders for sports and academic teams.

 

The instrumental music program at Sequoyah High School is the umbrella organization for 2 concert bands, string orchestra, marching band, steel drum band, S.H.A.P.E. (SHS Artistic Percussion Ensemble), jazz band and brass and woodwind ensembles. The Symphony and Symphonic Bands have participated in GMEA Festival/LGPE performances for 17 consecutive years earning 29 Superior ratings since the school opened in 1990.
